WHAT WE LOST LAST NIGHT...

Last night's School Board meeting was a massive let-down!

The meeting was long and the cuts were painful. Amongst the newest casualties to our community's schools are the following:

- Elimination of 7 Instructional Assistants
- Elimination of 75 Special Ed Assistants
- Reduction in hours (resulting in many eliminations of benefits eligibility) of 102 Instructional and Special Ed Assistants' positions
- Elimination/Reduction of over 25 other specific classified positions including office, cafeteria, media, and tech employees

This was all lumped into one agenda item which wasn't discussed and voted on until 11:30 PM. There were very few of the public still in attendance at this point and there was very little discussion. The lack of public support could have been attributed to the last minute (day of the meeting) attachment of the list of specific job numbers.

The reduction in classified positions was on there originally but it was changed last minute to add many more positions.

I noticed that there is a Press Release on the home page of the MDUSD website regarding the layoffs and reductions to CSEA employees. It was evidently posted on Tuesday. I question whether that truly serves as sufficient notice to those who were affected by this vote.

If you would like to read what they have to say on the matter, here is the link:

There is now a post on the CAC blog that explains the special ed cuts: http://bit.ly/aVmw4t.

Also, as noted in my On Assignment blog, the Press Release about the cuts wasn't posted on the district's website until Wednesday.

And FYI, the district has posted an application for those interested in being appointed to the new Measure C oversight committee at http://www.mdusd.org/NewsRoom/Pages/measccomapp.aspx.
